Berniece Mitchell Harris, 95, of Homewood, IL formerly of Earlville, IL passed away Thursday, June 29, 2017 in Manorcare Health SVS in Homewood. She was born to William and Grace Preston Mitchell on December 21, 1921 in rural Triumph, IL. Berniece attended grade school in Triumph in a two-room school and a one room school District 305 near Earlville, IL. She graduated from Earlville High School in 1939. Berniece married Robert Elwood Harris on August 21, 1941 at the Presbyterian Church in Mendota, IL. She was employed at Len Boyd’s grocery store in Earlville and also worked at the ourdoor theater for a short time. Later she was employed at the Earlville Leader for several years. Berniece spent 16 years at CTS Knights in Sandwich, IL as assistant personnel manager. She was a life-long member of the Earlville Presbyterian Church where she served as a deacon. Berniece and Robert were founding members of the Earlville Historical Society.
She is survived by two daughters, Bonnie Charles Swatek of Crete, IL and Mary Neil Strack Bissey of Champaign, IL; one son, Thomas William Loretta Larson Harris of Belvidere, IL; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Phebe Harris Thompson; thirteen nieces and nephews and their families.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert, one brother, Melvin Mitchell.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 7, 2017 at Earlville United Presbyterian Church in Earlville, IL with Pastor Del Keilman officiating. Burial of her urn will follow in Precinct Cemetery rural Earlville, IL. Visitation will be on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00.
