Barbara J. Smith, 62, of Gardner, IL passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2016 in Morris Hospital surrounded by her loving family. She was born October 5, 1953 in Mendota, IL the daughter of Boyd and Evelyn Jacobs Smith. She grew up in Earlville, attended Earlville Schools and graduated in the class of 1971. She graduated from Illinois State University and received a Masters Degree in Education. Barb worked as a teacher in Braidwood, IL at Reed-Custer Middle School retiring after 36 years of dedicated service. Barb was a lifetime member of the James H. Hamill Unit 549 American Legion Auxiliary of Earlville. She loved to travel and was able to visit all 50 states. Barb enjoyed visiting her younger sister in Wisconsin, often referring to it as her “vacation home”. She was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed visiting with all her friends and family
. She is survived by two sisters, Virginia Kenneth Krienert of Earlville, IL, and Joyce Smith and “Missy the cat” of Baraboo, WI, one niece Kristen Krienert of Bloomington, IL, two aunts, Lois “Toots” Ridge and JoAnne Eichorn, both of Mendota, IL and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Memorial services will be held at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, June 4, 2016 at Earlville United Methodist Church 313 Stilson St. Earlville, IL with Pastor Sandy Smith officiating. Burial of her urn will follow at Precinct Cemetery in rural Earlville. A Luncheon will follow in the church lower level. Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 4, 2016 in the church until the service at 12:30. In lieu of flowers Memorials may be directed to a fund to be decided later.
