Alvin Paul Klaeren, 86, of Newark passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born August 28, 1928 in Elmhurst, IL, the son of John L. and Elfriede (Gerhardt) Klaeren. He married Carla E. Fladung on June 14, 1969 at the 1st United Methodist Church in Elmhurst. Alvin was a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Sandwich and 1st United Methodist Church of Elmhurst. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953. Alvin was a licensed architect and a member of the American Institute of Architects. He played semi-pro football with the Elmhurst Travelers and was inducted into the American Football Association Hall of Fame in 2005. Alvin also was an avid water ski jumper and belonged to the 100 foot club. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and took great pride in his family.

He is survived by his wife, Carla of Newark, IL; one son, Chris (Kathy) Klaeren of Downers Grove, IL; three grandchildren, Jonny, Danny and Eleni; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Robert, Herbert and Raymond.

A Celebration of Life will be held 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at Salem Lutheran Church in Sandwich with the Reverend Wayne Derber officiating. Burial will be private. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, October 25, 2014 at the church in Sandwich. Memorials may be directed to The Alzheimer’s Association, Salem Lutheran Church of Sandwich or First United Methodist Church of Elmhurst.
