Alfred "Al" Stegman

Alfred “AL” Stegman, 83, of Harding, IL passed away Thursday, January 19, 2017 at his home. He was born January 7, 1934 in Morris, IL the son of Ned “Toby” and Helen Connor Stegman. He married Joyce Winterbottom on August 28, 1954 in Minooka, IL. Al attended Minooka Schools, then Knox College, then he received his master’s in Education from University of Illinois in Champaign. He started his athletic career at Minooka Schools where he was an outstanding left handed pitcher and also excelled in basketball. He continued at Knox College playing both baseball and basketball and then pitched in minor leagues for Wichita Woodchucks in Kansas, then pitched for the Ottawa KC’s and for the Earlville Rangers.
In 1956 he began teaching at Harding Grade School where he was also the principal and coach until 1971. He then moved to Serena High School where he was a math teacher, athletic director, and head coach for both baseball and basketball until he retired in 1993. Al was inducted into the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame for coaching in 1986. He was the first inductee into the Serena Huskers Hall of Fame and touched and influenced the lives of countless students, athletes and those who knew him.
He was a member of the Earlville Country Club, Harding Community Building Board and was a die-hard White Sox and Blackhawks fan. He enjoyed fishing, golf, gardening and was an avid Hybrid Tea Rose enthusiast, winning numerous awards. He instilled his passions in his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Joyce of Harding, IL his children Marcia Hitchins of Serena, IL, Frank Cindy Stegman of Harding, IL, Cynthia Ken Cliff Stegman of Hastings, MN, Julia Bill Walsh of Prairie Center, IL; ten grandchildren, Bert Danielle Hitchins, Dan Lauren Hitchins, Pete Janelle Stegman, Andy Kelsey Stegman, Stacy Dave Grey, Grady Nancy Kenevan, Fitz Melissa Kenevan, Erin Ryan Watson, Derek Kellogg, and Doug Erin Kellogg; ten great grandchildren, Lane, Kole, Maddi, and Kadi Stegman, Brooks Stegman, Charli and Sadie Grey, Griffin Kenevan, Dakota and Tucker Watson. Two brothers, Edward of Hastings, MN and John Jean Stegman of Angel Fire, NM formerly of Earlville, IL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one granddaughter Abby Lynn Stegman.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., Monday, January 23, 2017 at the Vintage Gym at Serena High School. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the family to establish a scholarship fund.
