Marilyn Mae Christenson was born on August 23, 1937 to Lawrence and Mary (Wilson) Christenson in Aurora, Nebraska. Lawrence farmed, and so the family moved as opportunities to farm became available, moving first to Iowa, then to Hinckley, IL before settling in the Plano area. Marilyn attended Plano High School and, at the age of fifteen, worked after school at Lord’s Drug Store in Plano. After high school, she worked at Northern Illinois Gas in Aurora. She married Robert Johns on December 30, 1956 at the Plano United Methodist Church, after which they moved to Virginia, while Bob was in the service. After the service, the couple moved to Lee Street in Plano.
They had two daughters, Lori and Stacy.
When the girls went to school, Marilyn went to work at Caywood and Associates in Plano. She was the friendly face of the front office of Caywood and Associates on Main Street, eager to greet and help customers. She later became the office manager and worked there until she retired in 2004. Marilyn was active in the Methodist Church. Her love of children was evident as she co-taught the 3–4-year-old Sunday School class for many years. In later years, she served the church by helping to count the collection money after the service. She was an independent lady who enjoyed serving others. Marilyn was a caretaker to her core, always happy to lend a helping hand, a smile, or a friendly conversation. She loved spending time with her family and loved doting on her grandchildren.
After retiring, Marilyn and Bob enjoyed spending time together, having fun with family and friends. They made annual visits to Hawaii to visit Bob’s sister, Emily Bracken, and her husband, Bill. Many years, Bob’s sister, Pat Clason, and her husband, Don, would accompany them, and many memories were made as they spent time together. Marilyn and Bob were thrilled to get a chance to visit Alaska at the invitation of their friends Ben and Marlene Carrol. They also enjoyed traveling to destination weddings with their old neighbors, the Gillette clan, earning them the reputation of “the wedding crashers”. Marilyn definitely displayed a love of life!
Marilyn passed away on Tuesday, August 13, 2024 at Alden Courts in Shorewood.
The visitation will be on Tuesday, September 3, from 9-11a.m. at the Plano Methodist Church. Her friends and family are invited to celebrate her life with the funeral at 11 a.m. with Pastor Steve Saunders officiating, followed by interment at Little Rock Cemetery. A luncheon in the church basement will follow.
She is survived by her daughter, Lori Woosley (Tony), her daughter, Stacy Rehberg (Randy), and grandchildren, Hailey Rehberg Witt (Brian), Logan Rehberg (Danielle), Taylor Eisele (Brandon), and her great grandchild, Ella Eisele, her sister, Melva Meier (Ken), her sister-in-law, Pat Clason, her sister-in-law, Emily Bracken (Bill), and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Johns, her parents, Lawrence and Mary (Wilson) Christenson, her brother, Loren Christenson, her sister-in-law, Jan Christenson, her brother-in-law, Donald Clason, and her niece, Sara Bliss Klatt (Bracken).
