Evelyn D. Roberts, 78, of Sandwich, Illinois formerly Plano, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2008 at her home in Sandwich.

Evelyn D. Roberts, born April 13, 1930 in Lansing, IL to Sherman C. and Susan M. (Spisak) Black. "Evie" graduated from Hammond (IN) High School in 1948. She worked at Butler Paper Co. in Chicago. She married her life-long friend, William W. Roberts, on January 1, 1952 when he came home on furlough from the U.S. Army in Germany. She joined him in Germany in September, 1952, and enjoyed 2 years there, meeting wonderful Army and German friends. They returned to the United States in 1954 and resided in DeKalb, then moved to Plano, IL in January, 1956 when Bill became an Illinois State Trooper. She was president of the Illinois State Police Wives Association, Joliet District. Evie also became active in Girl Scouts and was known as "Peanuts" to all her girls. She was a troop leader, cookie chairman, trained leaders, enjoyed teaching girls songs, games and dances, but most important, a love for their flag and country. She was a volunteer at Sandwich Hospital, taught Sunday School and was a counselor at Bible Camp.

Evie worked at F.W.Witt’s in Yorkville and CTS Knights in Sandwich. After Bill’s death in 1986, she enrolled at Waubonsee Community college and "re-entered the work world." After testing in Chicago she was eligible for Federal Employment and began working at USDOL/OSHA in North Aurora. She worked part-time at Wal-Mart, first in the office and then as a People Greeter where she enjoyed seeing the children and old and new friends. In April of 1994 she sold her home in Plano and moved to Sandwich, then retired from OSHA in 1995.

She is survived by a son William R. (Debbie) Roberts of Plano, two daughters, Erika R. (Andy) Salemi of Sandwich and Becky L. (Allan) Polivka of Dixon, IL Seven grandchildren, Tara Roberts of Suffen, NY., Zachary, Jacob and Katherine Roberts of Plano, IL, Lucas Hawkins of Hinckley, IL., Amber Polivka of Oak Park, IL., Dan Polivka (Nori Chuc) of Carbondale, IL and a great-grandson, Christopher Hartfield of New York. Also step-grandchildren and step-great children, two brothers, James E. Black of McMinnville, OR and S. Thomas Black (Mary Ellen) of Grand View, WI, step-sister Vivian Ethridge and many nieces and nephews. Also many dear friends.

Preceded in death by her husband Bill in November, 1986, her parents and an infant son, Jeffrey Alan Roberts and her step-brother Gene Brading.

Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, September 21, 2008 at Turner-Eighner Funeral Home, 3952 Turner Ave. Plano, IL 60545. (630) 552-3022 and on Monday, Sept. 22, 2008, there will be a viewing at 9:00 a.m. until the services at 10:00 am. At the United Methodist Church of Plano, 2129 N. Hale St. Plano, IL 60545.
