Margaret Swenson, 99, of Sandwich, passed away Saturday, Aug. 29, 2009 at Pleasant View Luther Home in Ottawa. Margaret was born November 16, 1909, in Grand Ridge IL, to Goodman and Helga Endresen Holman. She grew up on a farm northwest of Somonauk. She attended grade school at East Victor country school. Her first few weeks were difficult as she spoke hardly any English and her teacher spoke no Norwegian. She graduated from Sandwich High School at the top of her class. After attending Northern Illinois Teacher's College, she taught in Coy and Hubbard country schools in the Sandwich area.
While at Hubbard School she taught four children of a widower named Clarence Swenson, whom she married July 9, 1931. Besides these four children she also had three children of her own. She was a faithful stay at home Mom and family was very important to her. She loved to read and do crossword puzzles. Margaret was a life long member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
She is survived by five children, Charlotte Johnson of Mahwah, NJ, Marian Elleby of Minooka, IL, Clarion (Jean) Swenson of Sandwich, Helen Tammen of Ottawa, and Glenn (Carol) Swenson of Sandwich; one son-in-law, Tom Scidmore of Morrison, IL; one daughter-in-law, Patsy Swenson of Shelbyville, IL; twenty-three grandchildren, sixty-one great grandchildren, and many great great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and children Burdell Swenson and Carol Scidmore; three son-in-laws, Art Johnson, Bill Tammen and Kermit Elleby; one daughter-in-law, Marilyn Swenson; one granddaughter, Patty Swenson.
